History
- 2Wire was founded in 1998 by former members of PictureTel and Polycom.
- The 2Wire HomePortal® gateway was the market’s first intelligent gateway, launched in January 2000, and the market’s first wireless gateway, launched in January 2001.
- In summer 2002, 2Wire delivered the market’s first suite of broadband applications that could be easily deployed to both new and existing subscribers. These applications were remotely provisioned using CMS, our backend component management system.
- In December 2002, 2Wire published the Open Gateway Management Protocol (OGMP) to the DSL Forum. The OGMP formed the basis for the industry’s first CPE WAN management protocol, TR-069, ratified in June 2004. Simultaneous with the ratification, CMS became the industry’s first TR-069-compliant backend management system.
- In spring 2003, 2Wire shipped the first wireless gateway with a complete ‘System on a Chip’ architecture.
- In February 2004, 2Wire launched the MediaPortal® multi-service media platform, the industry’s first to integrate DSL and satellite services. MediaPortal-enabled set-top boxes delivered a complete networked entertainment solution combining television, DVR, video on demand, music, photos, and messaging. AT&T deployed the MediaPortal-enabled set-top box nationwide in the summer of 2006 as part of its HomezoneSM service.
- In January 2006, 2Wire unveiled the HomePortal iNID (intelligent Network Interface Device), the world’s first outdoor broadband home gateway, offering carriers a significant reduction in labor and maintenance costs when deploying bandwidth-intensive triple play services.
- In March 2007, 2Wire introduced the HomePortal BaseStation™, an intelligent gateway with an integrated femtocell, delivering a cost effective, end-to-end solution for fixed-mobile convergence.
- In November 2008, 2Wire introduced the MediaPoint® broadband entertainment solution, a customizable platform that unites the television with Internet video, music, and photos, as well as personal networked media content. Blockbuster and 2Wire later announced the 2Wire MediaPoint digital media player, an on-demand video solution offering movie fans instant access through their television sets to BLOCKBUSTER® ONDEMAND content.
- In January 2009, 2Wire introduced the HomePortal GEM™ platform, a modular solution enabling broadband service providers to quickly and cost-effectively deploy a wide range of new services.
As of 2010, 2Wire has shipped more than 30 million intelligent gateways, and continues to enjoy ongoing industry recognition, with over 30 awards for corporate achievement and visionary products.
